Star Anise is also known as Star aniseed or badian, the flavour and aroma is liqourice-like and distinctly star anise. It is often broken into smaller pieces & added to rice dishes. One of the key ingredients in chinese 5 spice, this is a common ingredient in oriental cooking.
Illicium verum, commonly called star anise, star aniseed, or Chinese star anise is a spice that closely resembles anise in flavour, obtained from the star-shaped pericarp of Illicium verum, a medium-sized native evergreen tree of northeast Vietnam and southwest China. The star-shaped fruits are harvested just before ripening.  It is called badian. It is widely used in Chinese cuisine.
